2 car garage dimensions
Each garage below is a steel building with two roll-up doors on the end wall, priced by the same model as the designer above: tube steel at the dealer’s list price, delivered and installed on your level site. The vehicle columns are how many park inside by the designer’s clearances, each at the size its maker publishes. Prices were read Oct 30, 2026. Pick a garage to open it in the designer.

- Minimum: a 20 × 20 ft garage, 400 sq ft, parks 2 cars but 0 pickups: a full-size pickup is too long for it.
- Standard: a 24 × 24 ft garage, 576 sq ft, parks 2 pickups or 2 SUVs behind two 9 × 8 ft roll-up doors on the end wall.
- Oversized: a 24 × 30 ft or 28 × 28 ft garage parks the same two vehicles with room for a bench, storage or a mower.
These are planning sizes of where vehicles park, not construction plans. Door framing and openings come from the dealer’s drawings and your building department.
Minimum size for two cars
The designer parks each vehicle nose first behind its own roll-up door, with 2 ft to each side wall, 3 ft between two vehicles to open their doors, 1 ft in front and 2 ft behind to walk around. The least garage that parks two of a kind that way, width by length in whole feet; when the doors need the longer wall, they go on the side wall:
| Side by side | Least size | Area | Roll-up doors |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cars2027 Toyota Camry | 20 × 20 ft | 400 sq ft | Two 8 × 8 ft, end wall |
| Pickups2026 Ford F-150 | 21 × 23 ft | 483 sq ft | Two 8 × 8 ft, end wall |
| SUVs2027 Chevrolet Tahoe | 21 × 24 ft | 504 sq ft | Two 9 × 8 ft, side wall |
- Two cars need 19 ft 1 in of clear width side by side, so 20 × 20 ft is the least two-car garage.
- Two pickups need the depth: a full-size pickup is 19 ft 4 in long, so the garage is 23 ft deep or more.
- Two SUVs need the width: an SUV is 7 ft 10 in wide and takes a door at least 8 ft 10 in wide, so the door wall is 24 ft.
A narrower garage does not take two doors. The designer reads, for a garage 18 feet wide: “The end wall is 18 ft; its doors take 16 ft and need at least 1 ft of wall beside each one.”
Garage doors and wall height
In the designer each roll-up door is one lane, so two vehicles side by side take two doors. The door width decides what passes: with two 8 × 8 ft roll-ups the designer reads “An SUV is 7 ft 10 in wide: it needs a door at least 8 ft 10 in wide.” Cars and pickups pass those doors; SUVs take wider ones.
The wall also has to leave room beside each door. Two doors spread evenly on a 22 × 22 ft garage sit close to its corners, so an SUV behind either door is short of the 2 ft the designer keeps to the side wall: the table’s 22 × 22 ft garage parks 2 cars but 0 SUVs.
The smaller garages in the table have 9 ft walls and the larger ones 10 ft. A taller wall takes a taller door, a roof rack or a car lift; the designer prices any wall height and tells you which doors fit it.
What fits in a two-car garage
With two 9 × 8 ft roll-ups, one walk door, a 24 × 24 ft garage reads “Fits two pickups.” The vehicles behind the drawing, at the sizes their makers publish:

Slab under a two-car garage
The slab is not in the garage’s price. Under a 24 × 24 ft garage a 4 in slab takes 11 cu yd of concrete and runs $2,300–$4,600 installed, so the garage on its slab comes to $12,500–$32,600. The concrete count covers the footprint, a thickened edge under the walls and extra for spillage: 4 in slab, 12 in thickened edge, 10% extra. A 4 in slab is above the code minimum for a concrete floor on the ground (International Residential Code, section R506.1).
The thickened edge in the concrete count is a planning allowance, not a footing design: where the ground freezes, the footing goes below the frost depth your building department sets.
How the sizes are worked out
Least size
For each count the designer tries door walls one foot apart, from narrow to wide, until every vehicle parks in its own lane, then depths the same way. Each vehicle gets the smallest roll-up it passes: 6 in clear on each side of it and 6 in above. The vehicle sizes are the makers’ published specifications; the clearances are the designer’s, for opening doors and walking around, not a code minimum.
Price range
- What it covers
- A tube-steel garage at the dealer’s list price, delivered and installed on your level site. The slab and site preparation are extra.
- What moves it
- The roof area, the wall area and the doors. The model behind it is fitted to 146 published prices from Alan's Factory Outlet, Carport Central and Get Carports.
- Why it is wide
- Sellers list the same building at very different prices, and the range holds the middle 80% of them. Where your quote lands depends on the seller, the steel and the options you add.
- Where it stops
- The data holds widths of 12 to 100 ft, lengths of 20 to 250 ft and walls of 6 to 20 ft. A garage framed on site by a contractor is priced by local quotes, not by these listings.
Questions
Is a 24x24 garage big enough for 2 cars?
Yes, and for two full-size pickups or two SUVs. A 24 × 24 ft garage is 576 sq ft; with two 9 × 8 ft roll-up doors on the end wall it parks 2 cars, 2 pickups or 2 SUVs, each with room to open its doors.
Can you fit two cars in a 20x20 garage?
Two cars, yes: a 20 × 20 ft garage with two 8 × 8 ft roll-up doors on the end wall parks 2 cars. Two full-size pickups do not fit: “A pickup is 19 ft 4 in long: the building is 20 ft deep from the doors.”
Can a 2 car garage be 18 feet wide?
Not with two roll-up doors. Two cars side by side need 19 ft 1 in of clear width, and for that wall the designer reads: “The end wall is 18 ft; its doors take 16 ft and need at least 1 ft of wall beside each one.” The least two-car garage it parks is 20 × 20 ft.
How many square feet is a 2 car garage?
400 sq ft at the 20 × 20 ft minimum for two cars, 576 sq ft for a 24 × 24 ft garage that takes two pickups, and 784 sq ft for an oversized 28 × 28 ft one.
How much does it cost to build a 24x24 garage?
$10,200–$28,000 for a 24 × 24 ft steel garage with 10 ft walls and two 9 × 8 ft roll-ups, one walk door, delivered and installed. The slab adds $2,300–$4,600, for $12,500–$32,600 in all.
